As many of you will remember, our keynote speaker last year was Darren Edwards. In the summer of 2016, Darren experienced a life-altering Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) during a near-fatal climbing accident, rendering him paralysed from the chest down. Despite this profound challenge, Darren, an avid climber, mountaineer, and former soldier, refused to let his disability extinguish his passion for adventure. In the summer of 2023, Darren, alongside his close friend Nick Morrall, united their passions and experiences to establish Adaptive Expeditions. Their vision was to provide individuals with disabilities the same opportunities, support, and encouragement to push their boundaries and discover their newfound potential.

"At Adaptive Expeditions, we empower individuals with disabilities to Adventure Beyond Limits. Whether born with a disability or navigating life after an injury, we create opportunities for you to experience the thrill and excitement of adventure travel and expeditions at enticing locations across the globe that are accessible, inclusive, and empowering."

In partnership with Wings for Life, an organisation dedicated to finding a cure for Spinal Cord Injury, Darren and his team will embark on a journey in December 2025 to redefine the impossible by attempting to set a new world record for the longest sit-ski expedition to the South Pole in the history of Antarctic exploration. This journey will raise crucial funds for over 270 groundbreaking research projects and clinical trials worldwide. As an ambassador, Darren knows the impact of their work and is committed to showing that, together, we can create a future where SCI is no longer a life sentence.

This expedition goes beyond the physical challenge – it’s a mission to redefine perceptions of disability and highlight the limitless potential of human resilience. By confronting the impossible, Darren aims to inspire and empower others facing similar challenges, proving that with determination, no obstacle is insurmountable - whilst raising vital funds to support Wings for Life work.

Jane Cooper (incoming ALARM President) has chosen both of Darren's charities to support this year and the proceeds will be split equally between Adaptive Expeditions and Wings for Life.

Members and sponsors will have the opportunity to donate to these worthwhile charities at the Risk Awards dinner on Monday 23 June during the President’s charity raffle.
