2E: Free speech and campus protests

11am – 12pm GMT, 23 June 2025 ‐ 1 hour

Session

Universities operate within a complicated legal framework. One challenge is ensuring freedom of speech, expression and assembly whilst also ensuring campuses remain safe and inclusive. When students started to 'Turn up the Volume' with activism that included protests and encampments, universities faced the challenge of meeting their legal obligations whilst staying true to their values. During this session Kelly will introduce an overview of the legal framework, the student movement, risks, challenges and how Newcastle University responded.
